Why Gethsemane Roses?
Here at Gethsemane, we take our roses very seriously, and the results show. Our goal is to provide the very best roses available, and the supplies and support to make your rose garden beautiful!
We have the best variety.
Gethsemane offers over 250 varieties of rose, brought in as bare root plants from seven growers around the USA and Canada. We carry a huge variety of Modern, Antique, and Species roses, chosen for their performance, fragrance, hardiness, and suitability for Chicagoland gardens. See below for a link to our 2012 catalog.
Our roses get a good start in life.
In early March, the Gethsemane rose season begins with the spring planting of the bare root roses. With our experienced planting crew of ten, we begin by carefully pruning
the canes and roots of each rose to stimulate robust new growth. Then, the pruned roses
are soaked in a nutritious solution of fish emulsion, liquefied seaweed, compost, and
water for up to 24 hours. Now they are ready to be planted!
Our roses have room to roam.
Most growers confine their roses to two- or three-gallon pots. Our roses are given a full six gallons of loose, top-quality soil in which to stretch out their roots, resulting in larger, healthier, less stressed plants for you. They are grown outside, never in a greenhouse.
Our roses are well cared for.
Gethsemane roses are given regular, timely feedings of our best available organically based, slow-release, granular rose food, as well as periodic snacks of fish emulsion and liquefied seaweed. They are never allowed to dry out, and are never pushed with cheap chemical fertilizers that can result in soft, pale new growth susceptible to insects and diseases. Our rose staff maintains the roses daily, deadheading and pruning as required, to keep the plants happy, healthy, and beautiful.
