Tropical Plants

Did you know that a houseplant can clean the air in your home?

Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen as part of the photosynthesis process. But new research has proven that many common houseplants absorb benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene as well. Some pollutants are also absorbed and rendered harmless in the soil of your plant.

Even NASA has been conducting tests using plants to clean the atmosphere in future space stations, in order to keep them fit for human habitation over extended periods of time. The NASA study generated the recommendation that you use 15 to 18 good sized houseplants in 6–8 inch containers to improve the air quality in an average 1,800 square foot home.

Whether you are looking for a small 4 inch tropical plant to get your clean air started, or a fourteen foot tall established tropical palm, you will find what you’re looking for in the Gethsemane Greenhouse. Check for the “Clean Air Plants” signs and bring beauty, life and improved air into your home this season.

The following fourteen plants have been identified by NASA as most effective in cleaning the air;
    1. English Ivy
    2. Spider Plant
    3. Golden Pothos
    4. Chinese Evergreen
    5. Bamboo or Reed Palm
    6. Snake Plant
    7. Heartleaf Philodendron
    8. Selloum Philodendron
    9. Elephant Ear Philodendron
    10. Red Edged Dracaena
    11. Cornstalk Dracaena
    12. Janet Craig Dracaena
    13. Warneck Dracaena
    14. Weeping Fig

All of these plants can be found in the Gethsemane Greenhouse.
