Spring

For Gethsemane, the arrival of pansies marks the shift from winter to spring and the beginning of the gardening season. Look for pansies to arrive when outside temperatures remain a constant 50F (usually sometime between the end of March and the beginning of April).

In the weeks preceding Easter, Easter Lilies (Lilium longiflorum) can be found in the Gethsemane Greenhouse. We are careful to manage the plants so that blooms peak just in time for the Easter holiday. Quantities may be limited, so contact us to check on availability.

Seeds arrive at Gethsemane in February, providing you with plenty of time to plan your garden and begin seed starting activies before planting season arrives. We carry a wide variety of seeds for flowers and edible plants. Check out our Seeds & Bulbs page for more information.

Drop-in containers are a quick and easy way to brighten up your outdoor spaces and Gethsemane’s Spring Containers are designed to stand-up to the fluctuating temperatures of the season. Each container is hand planted at Gethsemane and are available as pre-made designs or can be special ordered to fit your existing container. Contact us mid-April to discuss our current plant and color options and to order a personalized container.

Summer flowering bulbs are an effective way to add bold colors to your garden during its peak season. Here in Chicago, these bulbs are either treated as annuals or are dug up in the fall and stored for winter. Bulbs arrive at the end of March/ beginning of April. April through May, pink, blue, and white hot house hydrangeas permeate the greenhouse. They arrive at the start of their bloom cycle so the color lasts for a number of weeks.
Summer

Containers are a quick and easy way to brighten up your outdoor spaces and Gethsemane’s Summer Containers are designed to thrive. Each container is hand planted at Gethsemane and designed for a variety of light/sun exposures. You can pick-up a pre-made/drop-in design or special order a custom container designed for your existing container. Contact us beginning mid-May to discuss our current plant and color options and to obtain a quote.

Beginning in May, the Greenhouse brings in a variety of tropical plants to make your outdoor spaces spectacular. These plants are not cold hardy, so make certain the temperatures are no longer dipping below 55 F at night. Passion flowers, hibiscus, allamandas, plumerias, a variety of jasmines, oleanders, the list goes on. Many of these plants can be successfully overwintered inside.

Gethsemane’s trees are grown in North Carolina and Michigan at family farms that use time tested and honored traditions to produce Christmas trees of exceptional quality and freshness. Our trees are never stockpiled and are typically cut within 48 hours of shipping. It is not uncommon for trees to arrive at Gethsemane the day after they are harvested. Trees can be found in the Main Lot and the North Annex from Thanksgiving through Christmas.

2022 Poinsettia Delivery and Pickup Reservations will begin 11/01/2022. Announcement and signup link will be made available via our email subscription list, social media channels and website.
Thanksgiving through Christmas, our greenhouse is taken over by poinsettias. We carry a wide variety of shapes, colors, and sizes of poinsettias – all sourced from local, family owned and operated, growers. Plants arrive daily throughout the season, so we always have a diverse selection to choose from.

Some of our most popular holiday items are our custom holiday wreaths. Each frasier fir or noble fir mix wreath is hand decorated by Gethsemane artisans and made to order. Contact us between Thanksgiving and Christmas to discuss our current decoration options and order your unique holiday wreath. Due to demand, availability of materials may change quickly, so call and order early.

Each year, Gethsemane kicks off the holiday season with colorful amaryllis and snowy paperwhite narcissus. Bulbs can be purchased as part of a DIY take-home set, pre-planted in a decorative pot, as individual bulbs, or with a decorative water vessel designed specifically for these blooming beauties. Bulbs arrive mid-October and last throughout the New Year. Check our calendar for updated arrival dates.

Arriving in the Greenhouse in mid-November, these tropical plants make great living trees for inside the home. Supplies are limited and are available while they last. The trees are shipped in a number of sizes, from small tabletop trees to large floor specimens.

From the end of September through early Spring, you may find kiln-dried firewood at Gethsemane. Choose from a variety of woods and load sizes to fit your needs. Available for pick-up or delivery. Call first to check on availability.

Many unusual varieties of gourds and pumpkins dominate Gethsemane’s Main Yard throughout the month of October and into November. All of our pumpkins and gourds are grown and harvested locally at family owned and operated farms. Some expertly pre-decorated pumpkins can be found, if you’re lucky, throughout the season.

Straw bales can be used as festive seating and ornamentation during the fall holiday season, as an insulating ground cover for over-wintering plants in the yard, or as an alternative to raised bed gardening. No matter how you use them, Gethsemane stocks them throughout the month of October and while supplies last.

Gethsemane’s mums are cultivated locally by family owned and operated growers, many of whom grow exclusively for us. This means that we have a firm hand in quality control and can guarantee you that our mums are some of the fullest plants you will find. Mums arrive in the Main Yard towards the end of the season, so look for them around the end of September.
